"For the Skin of His Face Shone" • A Review of Shabbat Parshat Ki Tisa in the Shadow of the Gaon and Tzaddik Rabbi Eliezer Berland shlit"a

Before you is an extensive review of the prayers and Torah classes that took place on the holy Shabbat of Parshat Ki Tisa, 18 Adar 5786, in the shadow of the Gaon and Tzaddik Rabbi Eliezer Berland shlit"a:

The Night of the Holy Shabbat

At 17:06, Morinu HaRav shlit"a came out to the balcony of his home for the Minchah (afternoon) prayer of Friday evening, adorned in his Shabbat garments. They sang 'Or Zarua LaTzaddik' (Light is sown for the righteous) for 15 minutes. Afterward, Morinu HaRav shlit"a stood for the Minchah prayer. At the conclusion of the Friday afternoon Minchah, he recited the Seder HaHiskashrus (prayer of connection to the Tzaddikim) word for word, with the entire congregation answering after him. Following this, Morinu HaRav began Kabbalat Shabbat with all the psalms, starting from 'Lechu Neranena' until 'Mizmor LeDavid'. He then began singing 'Lecha Dodi', which lasted for about 40 minutes. Afterward, he recited 'Kevgavna' and the Maariv (evening) prayer for Friday night with singing and melodies. At the end of Maariv, Morinu HaRav continued with the traditional Shabbat night Zemirot (songs), as is his holy custom every Shabbat, and prolonged the singing of 'Shalom Aleichem' for about 5 minutes. After 'Shalom Aleichem', he recited Kaddish, and the prayer concluded at 19:18, after two hours and 20 minutes.

Shacharit (Morning) Prayer

For the Shacharit prayer, Morinu HaRav shlit"a came out at 04:31 and immediately began Chatzos (the midnight lament), the morning blessings, wrapped himself in his Tallit at the proper time, and continued the prayer in its regular order. At 05:20, he began reciting 'Hodu L'Hashem Kir'u Bishmo' in Pesukei D'Zimrah (Verses of Praise), prolonging it as he does every week with melodies and songs. However, there was no significant prolongation that lasted more than 5 minutes. Morinu HaRav shlit"a stood for the Shemoneh Esrei (silent devotion) prayer at 06:39. The duration of the Shacharit prayer was exactly two hours and ten minutes.

Reading of the Torah

After the conclusion of the Chazzan's repetition, they began the opening of the Holy Ark, singing 'Yehei Ra'ava' for several minutes, and took out the Torah scroll. One after another, those celebrating joyous occasions and those observing a yahrtzeit (anniversary of passing) went up for an Aliyah, meriting to stand alongside Morinu HaRav shlit"a during the prayer. From the opening of the Ark until the conclusion of the Haftarah blessings took about an hour.

Musaf Prayer and Kiddusha Rabba

At the conclusion of the Haftarah, Morinu HaRav shlit"a began reciting 'Yekum Purkan', prolonging the singing of 'Zar'a Chaya V'Kayam' (viable offspring) for about 10 minutes. Afterward, he recited Ashrei, and close to 08:10, he approached the Musaf (additional) prayer. Following the Chazzan's repetition, the Rav concluded the prayer in its regular order, and after reciting The Tikkun HaKlali, he made Kiddush over the cup for Kiddusha Rabba (the daytime Kiddush), and delivered a Torah class for about 18 minutes at great length.

At 09:02, he entered his holy home after about 4 hours and 31 minutes in which we merited to experience the Shacharit prayer, the Torah reading, Musaf, and the Torah class during Kiddusha Rabba together with Morinu HaRav shlit"a.

Minchah Prayer

At 17:29, Morinu HaRav shlit"a entered the balcony of his home for the Minchah prayer of the holy Shabbat and began singing 'Or Zarua LaTzaddik' for 10 minutes. Afterward, he recited Kaddish and they opened the Ark. Then, the Rav shlit"a read from the Torah—from Parshat Vayakhel—calling up three people. At the conclusion of the reading, they returned the Torah scroll to the Ark while singing 'Ki Lekach Tov', and stood for the Shemoneh Esrei of the Shabbat Minchah prayer.

Ra'ava D'Ra'avin (The Time of Ultimate Favor)

At the conclusion of the Shabbat Minchah prayer at 17:56, in his place on the balcony, the Rav shlit"a washed his hands for Shalosh Seudos (the Third Meal). He immediately began, as is his holy custom, with the Zemirot of the Third Meal for about 23 minutes. At the end of the Zemirot, he prolonged the singing of 'Yah Ribbon' for about 38 minutes, in the middle of which the Rav delivered a Torah class to his grandchildren on the balcony for about 5 minutes.

Afterward, he began singing the melodies:
"Nichsefa VeGam Kalta Nafshi" (My soul yearns, yea, even pines) for 25 minutes. "Urah Kevodi" (Awake, my glory) for 17 minutes. "Koh Amar Hashem Matza Chen BaMidbar" (Thus said Hashem: The people that survived the sword found grace in the wilderness) for 8 minutes. "Koh Amar Hashem Zacharti Lach Chesed Ne'urayich" (Thus said Hashem: I remember for you the kindness of your youth) for 5 minutes. "Ad Hena Azarunu Rachamecha" (Until here Your mercies have helped us) for 13 minutes.

At the conclusion of the melodies at 20:10, the Rav shlit"a began 'Tzur Mishelo Achalnu' and led the Zimun (invitation to grace) over the cup of wine, including Sheva Brachos (the seven wedding blessings).

Maariv and Havdalah

Immediately following Birkat HaMazon (Grace After Meals), the Rav shlit"a began singing 'LaMenatzeach BiNeginos' for a quarter of an hour. Now—after the departure of Shabbat—the singing was already accompanied by musical instruments and stormy dancing. After the singing concluded, the Rav shlit"a continued with the Maariv prayer of Motzaei Shabbat (Saturday night) with melodies of flaming fire. After the Shemoneh Esrei, he recited the order of 'Vihi Noam', prolonging the singing of 'Baruch Hu' and 'Hu Yiftach' for about 15 minutes. Afterward, he concluded the Maariv prayer in its regular order, and made Havdalah over the cup of wine with the singing of 'LaYehudim' for several minutes.

At the Departure of the Day of Rest

After Havdalah, the Rav washed his hands for Melaveh Malkah—Da Hi Seudata D'David Malka Meshicha (This is the meal of David, the King Mashiach). At 21:07, Morinu HaRav shlit"a sang all the Zemirot for Melaveh Malkah together with the entire congregation. Before the song 'Eliyahu HaNavi', he delivered a Torah class for 26 minutes. After the class, the Rav continued the Zemirot with 'Eliyahu HaNavi' and 'Ribbon Kol HaOlamim'. Following the Zemirot, Morinu HaRav led the Zimun over the cup of wine with Sheva Brachos. At the conclusion of Birkat HaMazon, the Rav delivered an additional Torah class for 2 minutes. At 22:08, he entered his holy home, after a prolonged period of over 4 hours and 40 minutes in which we merited to be together with him from the Minchah prayer, Shalosh Seudos, Maariv, and Melaveh Malkah.
