Before you are sparks from the daily lesson as delivered by our teacher, the Rav, Rabbi Eliezer Berland shlit"a – yesterday after the Maariv (evening) prayer, Monday night, the 2nd of Av, Parshas Devarim-Chazon:
"It is written at the end of Bamidbar (the book of Numbers), 'And among these there was not a man,' meaning that no woman passed away in the desert. Every year 15,788 men passed away. This is nearly sixteen thousand people, [and yet] not a single woman passed away; all the women who left Mitzrayim (Egypt) merited to enter Eretz Yisrael (the Land of Israel) whole. Forty years in the desert did not harm them at all. They were not confused by any machlokes (dispute), not even the dispute regarding the Egel (Golden Calf). The men said, 'Let us make a calf, [representing] the ox in the Merkavah (Divine Chariot).' The women said, 'We know nothing, we understand nothing.' She heard, 'You shall not make for yourself a carved image or any likeness that is in heaven above or on the earth beneath.' 'In heaven above' includes the Ma'aseh Merkavah (the Workings of the Chariot). The men said, 'In heaven above' does not include the Ma'aseh Merkavah... The men 'proved' to them that a calf is permitted. Hashem created the woman [as straight as] a ruler, such that she cannot understand that it is permitted to make a calf; she does not understand [the claim] that they do not need to enter Eretz Yisrael (the Land of Israel)."
