THE DAILY CHIZZUK FROM MOREINU HARAV ELIEZER BERLAND SHLIT”A

SUNDAY, ROSH CHODESH ELUL

These are his holy words:

Avraham broke all the idols, so Nimrod asked him: “How can you do such a thing, breaking idols? After all, these are idols – gods!”

“You killed god! Look what you’ve done—you broke god, you killed him. See how much blood was spilled from those gods.”

This happened twice. The first time was in his father’s shop, and then his father did not yet inform on him [to Nimrod]. The second time was when it was his turn to guard in Nimrod’s main hall. Nimrod had a giant hall filled with the newest statues, works of art.

The most advanced art was to make statues. Today people no longer believe they are gods, but in those days they believed they were gods. Suddenly, an old lady came wanting a statue of a seventy-year-old, so he gave her a statue of a seventy-year-old.

She put a thousand dollars down for the statue, and he said to her: “This was taken out of the oven just five minutes ago. You want a statue of a seventy-year-old? This was taken out of the oven just five minutes ago! It’s made of real clay, made in the oven.”

She grabbed her money, threw it [the statue] at him, and said, “Give me my money back!” She threw the statue into his face. Poor thing, he was injured; his face was covered in blood.

The next day another Jew came, ninety years old. He wanted a statue of a ninety-year-old, “like me,” [he requested]. So he brought out for him a statue that was wrinkled, bent over, and with a hunchback. He put a thousand dollars down. [Avraham] told him: “You know, this was just taken out of the oven one minute ago. You see, it’s still burning hot—be careful not to burn yourself. Don’t touch it, take something -- gloves, a piece of paper.”

“What? Just now they took it out of the oven?” He threw the statue into his face—his whole face was wounded.

After she threw the statue in his face, the old lady met Nimrod. She said: “Nimrod, you liar! Nimrod, what are you telling me about statues, gods? Just now they took it out of the oven—what kind of god is that?”

He said to her: “Who told you it isn’t god?”

“Avraham!”

“Avraham? Bring him here.”

So they brought Avraham. “Is it true that you said the statue isn’t god?”

“Yes, I said it isn’t god!”

“So who is God?”

“There is God in Heaven!”

Nimrod said: “No! I am god.” He pointed with his finger: “I am god.”

“If you are god, then who created the sun?”

Nimrod said: “I created the sun.”

“You created the sun? Then move it for me. Move it a millimeter, two centimeters—move the sun.”

Nimrod said: “What? Such a chutzpan like you! I haven’t seen such a chutzpan since the creation of the world. Yala—straight into the fire!” A huge furnace was made inside a huge oven, and they threw him into the fire. Avraham came out alive. He saw angels—the angel Gavriel came into the fire, cooled it off, poured cold water.

Nimrod said: “What’s going on here?”

Avraham emerged from the furnace. Nimrod bowed down to him and said: “I have discovered another god.” Nimrod did not want to admit that there is a God in Heaven!

The God in Heaven does not permit going with girls [without marriage].  He does not allow looking at a woman!
