Prayers for Learning Torah in Depth and Sharpening the Intellect by Rabbi Eliezer Berland Shlit”a

Ribbono Shel Olam – Master of the World, let me merit to be like Avraham, Yitzchak, and Yaakov, that in the merit of their learning in Shas, the lamp of the Matriarchs was never extinguished. Therefore, Shas plus the kollel (=1) equals “Neran lo kava – Their lamp was never extinguished” [Shas (360) plus 1=361; neran 300 lo 31 kava 27 plus 3 (for the three words) = 361].

Please, Merciful and Gracious One, let me merit through learning Torah with love, fear, and devukut (clinging to Hashem] to a woman of valor. Therefore, love 13, fear 216, and devukut 520 [אהבה יראה ובדבקות] equal 749, the gematria (numerical value) of woman 701 of valor 48 = 749. And through my learning Torah with devekut and only being in a state of love and devekut, may I merit to the revelation of Mashiach ben Yosef, who is called Nechemia ben Chushiel, because “and with devekut – ובדבקות” = 520, and Nechemia 113 ben 52 Chushiel 355 [also] equals 520, the secret of “and with devekut.” And Chushiel = 355 is the secret of the intellect (hasechel) = 355, because the main thing is to look at the intelligence in everything and to sharpen the intellect, and sharpening 32 the intellect 355 equals 387, the gematria of “The sea 55 saw 206 and fled 126” = 387, that then all the enemies and all the [evil] inclinations flee before him.

Ribbono Shel Olam – Master of the World, let me merit this year to the level of “I have forgiven as you have spoken,” and may I merit this year for all my deeds to be for the sake of Heaven, and may I merit to the level of “A gentile reply turns away wrath.”

Please, Merciful and Gracious One, “guide my in Your righteousness, Hashem,” “He restores my soul,” and my I merit this year to learn in depth, with understanding, and with pilpul (dialectical analysis) with the talmidim. May I merit this year to total guarding of my eyes, for You guard my steps.

Ribbono Shel Olam – Master of the World, let me merit to holy and pure thoughts. May I merit through learning Shas to get out of the mishkha d’chivya (serpent’s skin), [for] mishkha is the gematria of Shas plus 1 [Shas 360 plus 1 = 361; mishkha = 361]. Through this, may I merit for the entire year to be in the secret of the good 27 year 360 = 387, [mishkha 361 d’chivya 25 = 387]. Through this, may I merit to counsel and strength, for anyone who gets out of the serpent’s skin through learning Shas, merits to counsel and strength. Therefore, serpent’s skin equals 387 and counsel 165 and strength 222 equal 387.

And through learning Torah day and night in depth and with sharpening the intellect, may I merit to what Rabbeinu writes in [Likutey Moharan] Lesson 101 and Lesson 38, that anyone who merits to learn Torah in depth, merits to get out of all his klipot [the evil husks that cling to him] and all his lusts, and merits to drown Pharaoh’s chariots and army in the Red Sea through the aspect of Pharaoh, which are the supernal lights that are revealed to him. Then “keitz kol basar – the end of all flesh” drowns in the nukva dit’homa raba [the endless abyss], and may the verse be fulfilled: “He establishes the boundaries of the nations according to the number of the Children of Israel.” And when the learning is in depth and is clear and shines, one merits through this to rule over all the nations. Therefore, sharpening 22 the intellect 355 = 377 is the gematria of “your terror 112 on 100 the nations 165” = 377. Then, we merit to be holy and pure from every evil thought like Yosef HaTzaddik. Therefore, “sharpening the intellect” is the gematria of “He 12 is Yosef 156 HaTzaddik 209” = 377.
