Vav - Tefillah L'Ani (A Prayer of the Afflicted)

...they cannot be still, and they sway here and there, and to all sides. Like the light of a candle, for it is written, "The soul of man is the lamp of Hashem" (Proverbs 20:27). And it is written, "You are man" (Ezekiel 34:31)—you are called "man" (Adam), and not the idol-worshipping nations. The souls of the idol-worshipping nations are like fading straw, without any light resting upon them. Therefore, they are still and do not sway, for they do not have the Torah, and they do not burn with it, and the light does not rest within them. They stand like logs of wood in a burning fire, without the light resting upon them, and therefore they remain completely still without any light. Rabbi Yosi said: This is the clear truth of the matter! Fortunate is my portion that I have merited this, to hear this.
Translation of the Zohar's Language:
Rabbi Abba relates to Rabbi Yosi that he once asked Rashbi (Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai): "Why is it that all the nations of the world do not sway, but only the Jewish people alone? When they engage in Torah study, they sway here and there, without having learned this from any person in the world, and they are unable to stand in their place motionless like the nations of the world?"
Rashbi said to me: "You have reminded me of an exalted matter, yet people do not know and do not pay attention to it." He sat for a moment and wept, saying, "Woe to people who walk about like beasts of the field without understanding. In this matter specifically, the difference between the holy souls of the Jewish people and the nations of the world is evident. The souls of the Jewish people are hewn from the fire of the Supernal Torah, and therefore they are never still. Rather, they are like a flame of fire that sways here and there, whereas the nations..."
