Lecture for English Speakers at the Residence of the Esteemed Rabbi Eliezer
Berland shlit"a

On Sunday night, the 23rd of Tevet—the day of the King's birth—a lesson was held at the holy residence of our teacher, Rav Berland shlit"a, for the English-speaking members of our community.
Below is a summary of the topics our teacher, the Rav shlit"a, delivered during the lesson:
1. The month of Tevet is the secret of the cleft of the rock, a time for the revelation of the Thirteen Attributes of Mercy, "Behold, there is a place by Me" (Hineh makom iti) — "Iti" (by Me) has the numerical value (gematria) of Tevet.
2. Rosh Chodesh Shevat – the month of song and the month of Geulah; the more we sing, the more we bring the Geulah closer.
3. Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai wept over the four hundred years that the Jewish people would suffer due to the four words Abraham said: "If only Ishmael might live before You."
4. Pharaoh and the King of Nineveh – seven hundred years from the splitting of the Red Sea until Nineveh; the power of teshuvah (repentance) that transforms a person into a king.
5. Pharaoh and the Nile: The idolatry of the Nile, daily immersion, and understanding the verse, "My river is my own, and I have made it for myself."
6. The words of the Zohar in Behar: After the fiery furnace, everyone returned in teshuvah except for Nimrod; the power of giving and blessing.
7. The promise of abundance during the Shmita year – "I will command My blessing"; the doubling of abundance for one who does the will of Hashem.
8. The story of a man who gave away all his food in the desert despite the danger – faith versus human calculation.
9. "Who will lead me to the fortified city?" King David wanted to conquer Rome as well, but Hashem stopped him so that there would not be a situation where His wrath would be spent on wood and stones.
10. Hannah prayed 717 years before Chanukah that the Maccabees would defeat the Greeks.
11. Peninnah and Hannah: Jealousy, ten sons, and the depth of the conduct of Divine Judgment and Mercy.
12. The Binding of Isaac – how is it possible that Sarah was "terrified"? In truth, the Satan told her that Isaac was not slaughtered because he refused, and she did not believe it was possible that Isaac was not prepared to sacrifice his life, which in reality did not happen.
13. Rabbi Akiva, with self-sacrifice, his soul departed with the word "Echad" (One), and the reason he did not say "Ve'ahavta" (And you shall love) was because everyone around him would have been consumed by the intensity of the holiness.
14. The mistake of Joab son of Zeruiah and its rectification in the reincarnation of Benaiah son of Jehoiada.
15. The holiness of Jerusalem: The dispute between the Rambam and the Ra'avad as to whether the holiness exists without the Holy Temple.
16. The holiness of the Land in the future to come – the role of Mashiach ben David in the renewed sanctification of the Land.
17. The laws of the Four Species: Myrtle (Hadass), Willow (Aravah), and Palm branch (Lulav) – the literal meaning and the differences in opinions.
18. Zepho son of Eliphaz: A historical figure, honoring one's father, and kingship in the merit of Isaac's blessing.
19. Eliphaz's pursuit of Jacob; and the miracle that occurred for him with the horseman's garments on the banks of the Jordan.
20. The war between Esau and the sons of Jacob over the Cave of the Patriarchs; Naphtali jumping to search for the deed.
21. Judah as he approached Joseph: A single cry that brought down heroes and overturned the order of the world.
